چکیده

The main objective of this study was to examine the effects of NaCl on the leaf growth and some physiological and biochemical characteristics of an Algerian durum wheat (var. Waha) landrace. NaCl (150 mM), as compared to control plants, significantly reduced all the leaf-growth parameters as leaf area (33%), leaf dry weight (41%) and leaf fresh weight (32%), but did not induce any change in the leaf succulence and, consequently, in the leaf RWC. On the other hand, NaCl salinity induced the accumulation of proline (2.25 fold, P 0.05) and soluble sugars (60%, P 0.01) in the leaves of durum wheat seedlings. However, wile photosynthetic pigments content do not undergo important change, total carotenoids content decreased (14%) under salt stress conditions. NaCl treatment enhanced significantly the accumulation of H O (4.0-fold, P 0.01) 2 2 and led to lipid peroxidation. All of these parameters and the interaction among them were analyzed using ANOVA and multiple correlation analysis. The importance of the interactions between osmolytes and antioxidants in determining the salt tolerance of durum wheat was discussed.

A screening method to identify genetic variation in root growth response to a salinity gradient.

Salinity as well as drought are increasing problems in agriculture. Durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. ssp. durum Desf.) is relatively salt sensitive compared with bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and yields poorly on saline soil. Field studies indicate that roots of durum wheat do not proliferate as extensively as bread wheat in saline soil. In order to look for genetic diversity in root gro...

Genetic Divergence in Selected Durum Wheat Genotypes of Ethiopian Plasm

Wheat of both the tetraploid (Triticum durum Desf.) and hexaploid (Triticum aestivum L.), is the most important cereal crop in Ethiopia, ranking third in total production (17%) next to maize (Zea mays L.) and tef (CSA, 2002). Wheat covers a total arable land of 110,434 ha with average productivity of about 8.4 qt ha-1, which is below the national average (14.4 qt ha-1). A field experiment was c...

Drought is a wide-spread problem seriously influencing durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) production and quality, but development of resistant cultivars is hampered by the lack of effective selection criteria. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of several selection indices to identify drought resistance cultivars under a variety of environmental conditions. Twenty four duru...

The Response of Durum Wheat to the Preceding Crop in a Mediterranean Environment

Crop sequence is an important management practice that may affect durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) production. Field research was conducted in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 seasons in a rain-fed cold Mediterranean environment to examine the impact of the preceding crops alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), maize (Zea mays L.), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), and bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) on yie...

Reduction of the phenolic components in olive-mill wastewater by an enzymatic treatment and its impact on durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) germinability.

Olive-mill wastewater (OMW), an effluent of olive oil extraction process, is annually produced in huge amounts in olive growing areas. An interesting option for its disposal is the spreading on agricultural land, provided that phytotoxic effects are neutralized. The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the potential of an enzyme-based treatment in removing OMW phytotoxicity. T...
